316 stainless steel tube, also known as chromium-nickel alloy steel tube with added molybdenum, offers excellent resistance to wear, corrosion, and high strength. It outperforms regular 304 steel materials in various aspects. One of its remarkable features is its resistance to chloride ion corrosion stress cracking. This makes it an ideal choice for surviving in chloride-rich environments. The applications of SS 316 tube span across industries like petroleum, chemical, medical, food, light industry, mechanical instruments, and more. Its versatility extends to being used in both industrial pipelines and mechanical structural parts. Furthermore, due to its comparable bending and torsional strength and lighter weight, it finds extensive use in the manufacturing of mechanical parts and engineering structures.

ASTM A213 TP316 stainless steel tube standard:
  • The ASTM A213 is a widely recognized standard that defines the specifications for seamless ferritic and austenitic alloy-steel tubes used in boilers, superheaters, and heat exchangers. These tubes play a crucial role in various industrial applications by efficiently transferring heat between different mediums.
The primary objective of ASTM A213 is to ensure the high-quality manufacturing and reliable performance of these tubes in demanding conditions. By adhering to this standard, manufacturers can guarantee the integrity and durability of alloy-steel tubes, which are subject to elevated temperatures and pressure.
Seamless tubes are specifically designed to withstand the harsh operating conditions of boilers, superheaters, and heat exchangers. The ferritic and austenitic alloys used in their construction exhibit excellent resistance to corrosion, oxidation, and high-temperature creep. This makes them suitable for use in industries such as power generation, oil and gas, chemical processing, and petrochemicals.
The ASTM A213 standard specifies the dimensions, mechanical properties, and testing requirements for these tubes. It covers a wide range of sizes and grades, allowing manufacturers to produce tubes that meet specific application requirements. The standard also provides guidelines for heat treatment processes to enhance the mechanical properties of the tubes.
To ensure compliance with the ASTM A213 standard, manufacturers follow stringent quality control procedures during the production of seamless alloy-steel tubes. This involves using high-quality raw materials, precise manufacturing techniques, and advanced testing methods. The tubes undergo various non-destructive and destructive tests, including hydrostatic testing, ultrasonic testing, tension testing, and hardness testing.
By meeting the requirements of the ASTM A213 standard, manufacturers can provide customers with tubes that meet the highest standards of quality and performance. These tubes offer excellent resistance to corrosion and thermal stress, ensuring efficient and reliable operation in demanding environments.

  • Seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubing for general service can be specified according to ASTM A269. The ASTM A269 standard provides guidelines for the manufacturing and use of this type of tubing. It ensures that the tubing meets certain requirements and quality standards for general service applications. By adhering to the specifications outlined in ASTM A269, manufacturers can ensure the reliability, durability, and performance of the stainless steel tubing in various industrial and non-industrial settings. This standard plays a crucial role in maintaining the consistency and quality of the tubing used in a wide range of applications, such as transportation of fluids, structural components, and heat exchangers. Therefore, compliance with ASTM A269 is essential for the seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubing to meet the expected performance and safety standards in general service usage.

  • The ASTM B677 is a standard specification for seamless pipe and tube made from UNS N08904, UNS N08925, and UNS N08926. This specification ensures that the materials used in the manufacture of these pipes and tubes meet the necessary standards for durability, strength, and resistance to corrosion.
The UNS N08904 is a low carbon, high nickel and molybdenum austenitic stainless steel that is resistant to crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. The UNS N08925 is a high strength, high corrosion-resistant alloy that is suitable for use in sea water and other harsh environments. The UNS N08926 is a high strength, highly corrosion-resistant alloy that is used in a wide range of demanding applications.
The seamless pipe and tube produced under the ASTM B677 specification are designed to meet the requirements of a wide range of industries, including petrochemical, chemical processing, power generation, and offshore oil and gas production. These pipes and tubes are available in a range of sizes, wall thicknesses, and lengths.
The ASTM B677 specification sets out the requirements for the manufacture, testing, and certification of UNS N08904, UNS N08925, and UNS N08926 seamless pipes and tubes. This ensures that end users can be confident in the quality and performance of the pipes and tubes they are purchasing. Compliance with this specification is mandatory for all manufacturers producing these types of pipes and tubes.

316 stainless steel tube features

  1. 316 and 317 stainless steel are stainless steels that contain molybdenum. These steels have superior performance compared to 310 and 304 stainless steel. Their wide range of applications includes high temperature conditions and concentrations of sulfuric acid. For instance, DIN 1.4401 tube is highly suitable for use when the sulfuric acid concentration is below 15% or above 85%. Their molybdenum content enhances their corrosion resistance and durability, making them highly reliable in demanding environments. These stainless steels are valued for their ability to maintain their strength and integrity even at elevated temperatures, ensuring optimal performance and longevity.
  2. 316 stainless round tube, the corrosion resistance is better than 304 stainless steel, and it has good corrosion resistance in the pulp and paper production process. 316 stainless steel is also resistant to marine and aggressive industrial environments.
  3. Heat resistance: Stainless 316 tube has good oxidation resistance, and can be used intermittently below 1600 degrees and continuously used below 700 degrees. In the range of 800-1575 degrees, it is best not to use 316 stainless steel continuously, but when 316 stainless steel is used continuously outside this temperature range, the stainless steel has good heat resistance.
  4. Heat treatment: AISI 316 tube annealing is carried out in the temperature range of 1850-2050 degrees, followed by rapid annealing and rapid cooling. 316 stainless steel cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
  5. Welding performance: UNS S31600 tube has good welding performance. All standard welding methods can be used for welding. Depending on the application, 316Cb, 316L or 309Cb stainless steel filler rods or electrodes can be used for welding. In order to obtain the best corrosion resistance, the welded section of 316 stainless steel needs to be annealed after welding. If SS 1.4436 tubes are used, post-weld annealing is not required.
