Inconel 718 ASTM Standard

  • The ASTM B670 standard pertains to the specifications for precipitation-hardening nickel alloy (UNS N07718) plat, sheet, and strip, which are primarily used in high-temperature applications. The purpose of this standard is to establish the necessary requirements for the manufacturing, chemical composition, mechanical properties, and dimensional tolerances of these materials.
This ASTM specification specifically focuses on a particular type of nickel alloy, namely UNS N07718, which is known for its excellent strength and resistance to high-temperature environments. By defining the necessary guidelines and parameters, the standard ensures that the produced plates, sheets, and strips meet the required quality standards for their intended applications.
The mentioned materials undergo a precipitation-hardening process, which involves a heat treatment that enhances their mechanical properties and increases their strength. This process is crucial in ensuring that the alloy displays the desired characteristics when exposed to high temperatures.
The specified chemical composition for these materials includes elements such as nickel, chromium, iron, niobium, molybdenum, and titanium, among others. Each element plays a vital role in determining the alloy's properties, such as corrosion resistance, high-temperature strength, and weldability.
In addition to chemical composition, the standard also outlines the required mechanical properties that the nickel alloy plates, sheets, and strips need to exhibit. These properties include tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness. By adhering to the standard, manufacturers can provide materials that meet the performance expectations of various industries.
Dimensional tolerances are also addressed in the ASTM B670 standard to ensure that the finished products meet specific size and shape requirements. This ensures compatibility and ease of use in various applications, whether it be in aerospace, chemical processing, or other industries that rely on high-temperature materials.
Overall, the ASTM B670 standard serves as a comprehensive guideline for manufacturers, engineers, and end-users involved in the production and utilization of precipitation-hardening nickel alloy plates, sheets, and strips. By complying with this standard, the quality, consistency, and reliability of these materials are ensured when subjected to high-temperature service conditions.

Inconel 718 Alloy Heat Treatment

Annealed Inconel 718 alloy is a high-temperature resistant and high-strength nickel-based alloy, which can get better performance after proper heat treatment. The heat treatment process of the common AMS 5596 Inconel 718 sheet includes solution treatment and aging treatment.

  • Solution Annealing: First, heat Inconel 718 to a suitable temperature to achieve a uniform distribution of elements. This process helps to eliminate precipitated phases and lattice defects in the alloy. Usually done at a temperature of about 1700°F (927°C) and then cooled quickly.
  • Age Hardening: After solution treatment, 2.4668 Inconel 718 is usually subjected to aging treatment to enhance the mechanical properties of the material through precipitation hardening. Aging medicine is generally divided into two steps: First, aging is performed in the medium temperature range (approximately 1300°F or 704°C) to promote the precipitation of the hardened phase. It is then re-aged at a higher temperature (approximately 1550°F or 843°C) to continue optimizing the material's properties. The aging process requires precise temperature and time control.
