Description

317L Stainless Steel is a type of stainless steel that is known for its excellent corrosion resistance and high temperature strength. It falls under the ASTM A312 specification for seamless and welded pipes. The TP317L designation indicates that the pipe is made from grade 317L stainless steel, which is a low carbon version of 317 stainless steel.
317L stainless steel pipes are widely used in various industries, such as chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, food processing, and marine applications. They offer superior resistance to acidic and corrosive environments, making them suitable for handling acids, alkalis, and chloride-containing solutions.
The properties of 317L stainless steel include a high tensile strength, good creep and stress rupture strength, and excellent formability. It has a lower carbon content compared to 317 stainless steel, which improves its weldability. This allows for easier fabrication and ensures that the welded joints retain their corrosion resistance.
There are several suppliers of 317L stainless steel pipes in the market. It is essential to choose a reputable supplier who provides high-quality products that meet ASTM standards. The price of 317L stainless steel pipes may vary depending on factors such as size, quantity, and supplier.
317L stainless steel pipes are available in different forms, including seamless and welded pipes. The seamless pipes are manufactured by extrusion or rotary piercing, while the welded pipes are made by bending and welding the steel plates or coils.
The schedule 40 designation refers to the wall thickness of the pipe. Schedule 40 317L stainless steel pipes have a standard wall thickness and are commonly used in general-purpose applications.
In addition to pipes, 317L stainless steel is also available in various other forms, such as round bars, sheets, plates, and fittings. The material can be easily machined, welded, and formed to meet specific requirements.
Overall, 317L stainless steel pipes are a popular choice for applications that require excellent corrosion resistance, high temperature strength, and durability. Whether it is for chemical processing, oil and gas, or any other industry, choosing the right stainless steel pipe is crucial for ensuring optimal performance and longevity.

The ASTM A312 specification outlines the requirements for a particular type of stainless steel pipe known as the 317L. This pipe is special due to its low carbon content, as indicated by the "L" in its name, which sets it apart from standard 317 stainless steel. This lower carbon content is particularly important when welding the pipe, as it helps prevent carbide precipitation. This, in turn, increases the corrosion resistance of the 317L pipe, making it a highly desirable option for many different applications.

ASTM A312 TP317L stainless steel pipe standard:
  • The ASTM A312 is a standard specification that covers seamless, welded, and heavily cold worked austenitic stainless steel pipes. This specification outlines the requirements for pipes that are intended for high-temperature and general corrosive service.
Seamless pipes refer to those without any welding or joints, while welded pipes are those that are made by joining two or more pieces of metal together. Heavily cold worked pipes are those that have been subjected to cold working to achieve desired dimensions and properties.
The austenitic stainless steel pipes covered by ASTM A312 are primarily used in applications that require resistance to high temperatures and corrosive environments, such as chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, and food processing.
To ensure the quality of the pipes, ASTM A312 specifies the testing and inspection requirements, including mechanical tests, non-destructive tests, and hydrostatic tests. The standard also provides guidelines for the marking and packaging of the pipes.
In conclusion, the ASTM A312 sets the standards for seamless, welded, and heavily cold worked austenitic stainless steel pipes, ensuring their quality and suitability for various applications.

SS 317L Chemical Composition

The design chemical composition of ASTM A312 TP317L pipe includes chromium, nickel, molybdenum, manganese, silicon, phosphorus, carbon, and sulfur, which has excellent corrosion resistance, high tensile strength, and good heat resistance. Molybdenum-containing grade 316 contains about 2% - 3% of the above elements, and the addition of molybdenum further enhances the corrosion resistance of 317L stainless steel, making it suitable for corrosive environments. Therefore, 317L stainless steel round pipe is an improved version of marine-grade alloy 316.

ASTM A312 TP317l Stainless Steel Pipe Type

ASTM A312 TP317L includes ASTM A312 seamless pipe, and A312 welded pipe, TP317L seamless pipe is produced by an extrusion process. WNR.1.4438 seamless pipe has excellent load-carrying capacity and strength compared to other pipes in this grade. These pipes can carry 20% more fluid. SS 317L welded pipe is a cost-effective alternative to seamless pipe, manufactured by welding it into place using standard processes. AISI 317L ERW pipes are usually produced by cold rolled pipes, welded pipes have a lower bearing capacity, but different large diameter pipes can be produced at relatively low prices.

ASTM A312 317L Stainless Steel Pipe Size

AISI 317l pipe is available in different sizes. Resistance welded tubing ranges from ½ inch to 24 inch OD, and electric fusion welded tubing ranges from 6 inches to 100 inches OD. Available in wall thickness from 5 to XXS, these pipes can be made as seamless, ERW, EFW, or LSAW pipes. ASTM A312 317l stainless pipe is commonly used in industries such as chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, food processing, and pulp and paper. They are also suitable for applications requiring corrosion resistance to acids, bases, and chlorides.
